室内屏面积一般在十几平米以下 ,点密度较高,在非阳光直射或灯光照明环境使用,观看距离在几米以外,屏体不具备密封防水能力。室外屏面积一般从几平米到几十甚至上百平米,点密度较稀 (多为1000-4000点每平米),发光亮度在3000-6000cd/平米(朝向不同,亮度要求不同 ),可在阳光直射条件下使用,观看距离在几十米以外,屏体具有良好的防风抗雨及防雷能力。半室外屏介于室外及室内两者之间,具有较高的发光亮度,可在非阳光直射室外下使用,屏体有一定的密封,一般在屋檐下或橱窗内。

其次,在发光寿命方面,LED背光技术则超越了CCFL,是CCFL技术的提升。普通的CCFL背光的寿命基本在3万—4万小时左右,一些顶级的CCFL背光源(WCG-CCFL)寿命大约在6万小时左右。这样的寿命即使对于频繁使用的用户来说,也能维持好几年的时间。而LED背光的寿命就更长了,现阶段白色LED背光源寿命已经高达10万小时,即使24小时不间断使用,其寿命也可足够5年了。

LED背光和端面照光兴起的一个重要因素就是欧盟施行的RoHS指令。该指令规定自2006年7月1日起,消除在欧盟成员国销售的电子装置中的铅、镉、汞、六价铬、多溴联苯和多溴联苯醚等物质。而汞是CCFL灯管和其它类型荧光照明的主要成份。LED灯则根本不使用水银。

目前传统CCFL冷阴极荧光灯虽然耗电量大、发光质量一般,但是其发光效率可达到50~100流明/瓦,而白光LED器件在刚起步时发光效率仅为20lm/W甚至更低。不过,白光LED的发光效率以每年提高60%的幅度提升,到目前为止,白光LED器件的发光效率突破50lm/W,达到实用化水平。

而RGB-LED技术,虽然有着众多的优点,却仍然存在着一些不可避免的局限性。譬如因使用了大量独立的LED器件,点阵排列相当密集,不仅较难保证每一个器件发光的一致性,而且散热也非常不理想,达不到超长的寿命。其二,RGB-LED背光源的发光效率还稍弱一些,目前普遍在到50流明/W左右,最高的也只有70流明/W,要实现和CCFL100流明/W同等级的发光亮度,必然导致功耗的增加和发热量的提升。其次,虽然RGB-LED的色彩纯度较高,但是长期使用后每种LED色彩衰减的幅度并不一致,这也将对画面质量产生较大的影响。
