According to foreign media reports, on the morning of January 14, avalanches suddenly occurred in several places in Kupwara, balamura and ganderbar areas in northern Kashmir. A large number of people were buried in Pakistan and India as a result of the avalanche. So far, the head of the disaster management department in Pakistan controlled Kashmir has said 57 people have been killed, while the Indian military says four Indian Army soldiers and five civilians have died in the past 48 hours.
The northern part of Indian controlled Kashmir is famous for its snow peaks and natural beauty. It began to snow on the 12th, and the intensity of snow on the 13th was further enhanced. Heavy snow disturbed the lives of local people, and many roads were closed due to heavy snow.
It is understood that the area where the avalanche occurred is located in the high altitude area, which used to be the area where the Indian army and the Pakistani army often faced each other. Moreover, not only India, but also Pakistan's army often suffers from personnel and equipment losses due to avalanches.
According to Pakistani officials, many villagers in the nilum valley area are still trapped in the avalanche. An official said that with the rescue work going on, many missing people may have died.
Meanwhile, in western Pakistan, heavy snow in southwest Balochistan province destroyed several houses in the mountainous area, killing 17 people.
The Disaster Management Agency declared a state of emergency in seven areas of the mineral rich province and sought the help of the military for rescue operations. Due to heavy snow, the main highway connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan has been blocked, forcing officials to suspend supplies to Afghanistan.
Previously, according to relevant information released by the Ministry of defense of India, the Indian army stationed in the high-altitude area of Kashmir encountered no less than 10 avalanches between 2016 and 2019. What's more, the number of Indian soldiers killed by avalanches in three years reached 74.
